Built by returning World War II veterans in the early 1940s, the Upton Arena has long been a staple in Weston County, WY, agricultural and recreational life. Through the years, it became a hub for many exciting events, including the annual Upton Ag Day, kids' rodeos and ranch rodeos.

Today, despite being the yearly host of Upton’s Fun Days and the Ranch Rodeo Finals, the usage of the arena lessened to the point the community questioned its need. But, three local leaders have formed the Upton Arena Board to breathe new life into the beloved facility.

“We want to preserve this space to reflect Upton’s agricultural heritage but also foster a sense of community and pride for residents and visitors,” said Sara Rankin, who, along with Nastel Dean and Toni Gipson, form the board.

Based in agriculture

Agriculture has played a vital role in the economies of Upton and Weston County. March is a perfect time to recognize the significance of the Upton Arena amidst National Ag Week March 16-22 and National Ag Day on March 18. The USDA 2022 Census of Agriculture indicated the county's agricultural production had a market value of over $43 million, with livestock, especially cattle and calves, making up 98% of the sales. Approximately 260 farms in the county, encompassing over 1.3 million acres of land, are predominantly utilized for pastureland and livestock.

Community wants arena

The Upton Arena Board has successfully enlisted the community’s appreciation for the Upton Arena. Through various fundraising activities, including the Upton Chamber of Commerce dedicating its proceeds from its annual Festival of Tables, the board facilitated numerous critical arena improvements, from electrical upgrades to facility enhancements like tearing down an old crow’s nest. A set of bleachers was found in the community and donated to the arena as well.

“The community has come together in support of the arena. We’ve seen people who were initially skeptical or even against it now donating, offering help, and attending events,” said Rankin. “This unexpected outpouring of support is a crucial part of the arena’s success and speaks to the deep sense of community pride that exists in Upton.”

Community asset

The efforts have ensured that the arena is not only functional but also welcoming for all types of events, both agricultural and non-agricultural. While agricultural events remain at the core of the arena’s offerings, the board members have ambitious plans for the future. They have ideas for other events, such as beach volleyball tournaments, outdoor movie screenings, and even polo matches. These new activities can attract visitors to Upton and also provide a boost to local businesses.

“Beyond hosting events, the Upton Arena can help build community pride as a vital space where Upton’s residents can come together to celebrate their shared values and heritage,” said Gipson. “The Upton Arena is more than just a facility - it’s a community asset.”

Working with other counties and towns is key to the Upton Arena’s future success. The Upton Economic Development Board and local organizations like the Chamber of Commerce have been instrumental in supporting the arena’s mission.

“It’s all about collaboration,” says Rankin. “Together, we can make Upton a place where people want to come, stay and invest.”
